Is Austria's southernmost region and borders Italy and Slovenia to the South. Because of the location, it is considerably warmer and sunnier than the rest of Austria. The weather type is generally regarded as being of a Mediterranean climate.

As a consequence, Spring starts earlier here and Autumn lingers longer, although the winter months can be almost as cold and snowy as in the north of the country.

The region of Carinthia features a central, fertile, plain that is encircled by ranges of mountains. There are numerous lakes – over 1000 in total – all of which are of drinking water quality and some of which are thermally heated.

It is a year round holiday region, with charming villages and stunning scenery everywhere. It is renowned for good skiing resorts, of course, as well as Spas and water sports activities around many of the lakes. The largest and most important lakes are the WörtherSee, the MillstätterSee, the OssiacherSee, the WeißenSee, the FaakerSee, the KeutschacherSee and the KlopeinerSee.

There are two large national parks - the Hohe Tauern and the Nockberge - plus numerous nature reserves in the region.

The principle city is Klagenfurt, which is home to the region’s only airport. Ryanair fly there twice a week, from Stanstead airport. The city of Villach is the hub of the extensive rail network, which can take you to almost any part of Europe - on time, in comfort and on modern, clean trains!

There are also flights into Salzburg, from many UK regional airports – for instance Easyjet fly there from Bristol. To drive into the heartland of Carinthia is both easy and quick, from there.

There is a strong Italian influence in Carinthia. Most restaurants feature Italian food and many people speak some Italian, as well as English. The people are also generally more outgoing and less formal than in other regions of Austria.

However, the immense pride in their country is still very much in evidence – along with the politeness and good manners that are a hallmark of all Austrians!

The Austrian cost of living falls somewhere in the middle of the European average. This means that, for many people, it is around 80% of the UK average!

Housing, in particular, is much cheaper that the UK and, in fact, cheaper than the generally sought after parts of Spain and France. The total population is only around 550,000 and Carinthia enjoys extremely low levels of crime.
